Where sound comes alive
In the brand-new listening room at Ultimate Audio, in Lisbon, still smelling of fresh polish, I felt instantly transported to the heart of Japanese sound. In front of me were Mr. Suzuki, President, Mr. Inokuma, Executive Director, and Mr. Tosuka, Sales Director. Not just executives, but guardians of a philosophy that has spanned more than half a century — a relentless pursuit of detail, precision, and emotion.

You can watch the full interview video at the end of this article.
The Beginning: Precision in the DNA
Founded in 1972 as Kensonic, the company quickly became Accuphase — “Accurate Phase”. Each early product, from the FM tuner T-100 to the C-200 preamplifier and P-300 amplifier, carried a bold ambition: to redefine standards, without ever submitting to market trends.
“Every new product uses the previous model as reference. Our goal is to create original sound, high quality, and durability.”
— Mr. Inokuma

There it was, in its almost brutal simplicity: the essence of Accuphase. Sound itself is the benchmark.
From CD to Streaming: Music as a Guiding Thread
From the 1980s to the 2000s, Accuphase expanded into CD players and SACD systems, initially keeping transport and DAC separate — preserving sonic integrity. Today, amid the streaming revolution, the brand does not follow trends blindly: it observes, understands, adapts, and stays true to its philosophy.
“Streaming is important, but our focus remains on our engineering philosophy. We need to ensure long-term performance and reliability.”
— Mr. Inokuma

For them, the future isn’t about chasing trends but balancing technological innovation with the integrity and musicality of each piece of equipment.
Focus on Sound: Emotion Above Technique
By the end of our conversation, it was clear that Accuphase treats sound like a canvas: every detail matters.
- Depth and expansive soundstage
- Centered precision and meticulous detail
- Ability to convey emotion and musical dynamics
“Sound trends have changed over decades. Today, the focus is on conveying music’s emotion and dynamics rather than only accuracy.”
— Mr. Inokuma

Every piece of equipment is a tool for music, not just a technical object. Even its physical presence reinforces a sense of care and longevity.
Distributors and Listening to the Listener
In Portugal, the partnership with Ultimate Audio is more than commercial; it’s an ongoing dialogue. Feedback from dealers and customers shapes the brand’s path, ensuring excellence remains constant.
“Close communication with distributors is critical. Feedback from dealers and customers informs future designs.”
— Mr. Inokuma

Sound doesn’t live only in the listening room; it travels through those who understand and respect every nuance.
Philosophy: Step by Step, No Shortcuts
Trends? Ignored. Turntables? Not their field. Every step is deliberate, measured — a near-surgical progression in the evolution of sound.
“We focus on electrical circuit engineering. We do not follow every trend; we improve carefully and ensure performance and sound quality remain excellent.”
— Mr. Inokuma
Conclusion: Listening to the Past, Anticipating the Future
Sitting with the Accuphase team was more than an interview. It was decades of history, innovation, and musical passion told in real time.
For MoustachesToys, these conversations are not just about products; they are about understanding the soul of high-end audio, about conveying a philosophy that transforms each piece into a living object, capable of evoking emotion and lasting.

Visiting Ultimate Audio was a lesson in sound, discipline, and respect for what music demands — an experience I now share with readers and audiophiles ready to immerse themselves in every detail, every gesture, every pause between notes.
