The new generation Magico’s S series was released In 2023 (MoustachesToys report from the S3 presentation in Lisbon). In celebration of Magico’s 20th anniversary, the Magico S5 MKII 2024 has arrived.
The Magico S5 MKII 2024 brings a series of advancements, benefiting from the knowledge and processes used in the M Series. The slightest vibrations of the chassis panels were measured, and the sound pressure levels they generate were calculated, allowing Magico to consider them from the beginning of the design process. The announced result: according to Magico, the S5 cabinet does not add any coloration to the sound. Multiple acoustic measurements were taken around the S5, allowing Magico to get closer and closer to the theoretical ideal acoustic response of a multi-way speaker.
SCULPTED CHASSIS
The curved and molded aluminum chassis has been optimized using 3D simulation to minimize internal resonance and maximize rigidity, while allowing for optimal damping. The front panel is curved to minimize diffraction effects. The internal volume of the S5 has been increased compared to the previous version. The larger bass enclosure allows the S5’s low-frequency response to “mine” 5Hz lower than the previous generation – down to 20Hz – while maintaining the same sensitivity (88dB).
DRIVERS
A pivotal change from Magico’s previous cones is the honeycomb aluminum core, sandwiched by graphene-reinforced carbon fiber. The central cone structure in recently developed materials allows for thinner, lighter weight, and more effective damping.
In addition to the improved cone construction, Magico has developed a new driver enclosure. This structure is said to improve both mechanical and acoustic parameters, such as significantly improved force distribution and better suspension designs. The new chassis has minimal acoustic contribution.
MIDRANGE
The S5’s midrange driver has a 6″ diameter with a 3″ voice coil. This driver features two large neodymium magnets, a fully copper-clad pole piece, and a pure titanium voice coil.
BASS
The bass of the S5 is provided by a pair of 10″ woofers. Each driver features a 5″ titanium voice coil. These woofers have a copper-clad pole piece and are capable of half an inch of excursion.
TWEETER
The S5’s tweeter is based on the M Series one, with a beryllium-coated diamond diaphragm. A neodymium-based motor system provides, according to the manufacturer, the lowest possible distortion, along with a higher power handling capability than previous models in the S Series. Magico also promises improvements in the mechanical and acoustic performance of the rear chamber.
CROSSOVER
The Elliptical Symmetry Crossover (ESXO) in three-way configuration using a Linkwitz-Riley filter. The S5 use state-of-the-art Mundorf components, including the MResist Ultra Resistors. New are the Mundorf MCoil foil coils to reduce background noise.
FINISHES
The S5 is available in a selection of finishes: six Softec choices, smooth to the touch; and six High Gloss finishes. The three-foot damping system uses premium materials.
MAGICO’s 20 YEARS
Orders for Magico S5 MKII 2024 entering this year will include a special accessory box celebrating Magico’s 20th anniversary. Each machined aluminum accessory box is engraved with the serial numbers and the “20” anniversary Magico’s logo.
